Beautiful Nauvoo

Family vacation June 25-30 2009

The Nauvoo Temple sit on top of a hill overlooking the Mississippi River. Such a beautiful Temple, we were able to do a session and baptisms on Friday, it is as beautiful inside as it is outside.

We took a carriage tour around the town, where they explain what each building was used for and other stories or event that were worth mentioning. Doug's parents are serving a Temple Mission here until October. Here is a photo of Aden and Margaret

Here is the Family Shot, we even got Aden in the back, it was so hot- nearly 102 degrees and what seemed like 100% humidity.

Mason only lasted a short while, he got most of his naps this way- that is sleeping on whomever shoulder he was leaning on at the time. Let's just say we were both hot and sticky after this carriage ride.

This is after Aden gave us a talk in the meeting room above the Joseph Smith Store.

Our visit landed on the 165th anniversary of Joseph Smith Jr. death. We were able to go to Carthage Jail and attend the Memorial services for him. We later went to tour Carthage Jail it was not what I expected, it is much smalled than I thought and the home/jail only had one cell, but what took me back was seeing the bullet hole in the door that killed Hyrum Smith when he was trying to hold the door closed from the mob.

The two best Nannies.. I mean Nieces in the world! Loren and Robin. Girls, the boys just love you!

We visited the old Nauvoo Cemetery where many of the early Pioneers were buried. This cemetery is a few miles away from the town and we had to hike about 1/4 mile to get to it. Many of the head stone are worn down where only a few letters are legible, many have feet stone. Before you walk up to the field there is a monument that lists many others who are buried in this cemetery but are in unmarked graves.

They made hats and played sticks, Mason only lasted until the picture was taken, then he made his way back to the audience.

Hours before we left Mason started to develop croup, so we rushed to get him medicine an a nebulizer, so here, he is doing his dose of meds before bedtime, I will say, he took it like a man!

During our stay we learned how to make bricks, horse shoes, bread, rugs, candles, turn wool or flax to thread, water barrels- almost everything that a pioneer would need to know. Above is Aden making his very own rope! This trip was such a fun experience for all of us, next time we will plan to stay the whole week- so we can see everything Nauvoo has to offer!

One night we were visited by thousands of Mayflies, my only guess is that it must have been their 10 year infestation. We were swarmed by mayflies, they were in the tree, on light posts, in windows, on the road. All the pictures you see are of Mayflies and this went on from dusk until the early morning.
